The soil is naturally filled with nutrients but it may not be enough for the whole garden that is why some would opt to placing fertilizers allowing plants to have the nutrients it needs.

Gardening is more than stuffing plants onto the ground. There are a lot of things that you have to think about. One of the basics about gardening is to canvas the soil. In a garden, majority of the plants are on the soil and even those plants that are hanged are still placed on a pot of soil. Before you start planting, here are some ways to prepare the soil in your garden.

1. Location. Look for the perfect spot. To keep you from planting and uprooting your plants, it would be better if you look for the best location. It should be somewhere where the sun and shade are equally delivered. It should be spacious enough for plants to grow to its fullest.

2. Type of soil. As mentioned, not all soil types are made for gardening. If the soil in your area is sandy it causes water to drain faster, while clay soil doesn't allow water and air to penetrate through it causing the plants to starve. The best type of soil is the loamy soil. This soil contains most of the nutrients plants need plus it retains enough water for the roots and allows air to penetrate through it.

3. Soil Ph. The soil ph is usually tested by sending soil samples to a laboratory. Different plants thrive on soil with varying ph. In the case of grass it is able to absorb more nutrients if it is planted on a slightly acidic soil. If your soil ph is slightly high meaning it is too acidic, you can reduce the acidity by adding lime. If the soil is too basic increase its acidity by adding sulphur. It is also advisable to have your soil ph checked once in a while.

4. Weeds and other outgrowths. Before you plant anything on your plot make sure that you have removed all weeds and other outgrowths. In case you fail to do so these grasses and weeds will absorb the nutrients meant for your flowers and other plants. Weeds will also compete with your plants' growth. Aside from that it would be unsightly to have weeds and other outgrowths growing along with your flowers in your garden.

5. Tilling. Tilling and digging will help loosen the soil underneath. With the soil loosened it will be easier for the roots to extend deeper. Also by tilling you will be able to remove the rocks and stones hidden beneath the ground.

6. Fertilizers and compost. You can improve your soil's fertility by adding fertilizers or organic materials usually in the form of compost. Your plants will grow better.

Prior to anything else it would be best if your take on the task of improving the soil's quality. Fertile soil contains nutrients that your plants need. If you want a beautiful garden filled with flowers and foliage you should keep your plot fertile all or most of the time.
