Five Steps To Prepare The Soil For A Flower Garden
Planning to start your own flower garden? The first thing that you need to learn and understand is that your garden will need good soil. Your home probably has the soil that you need but you need to prepare that soil so that it's good for flowers and vegetables that you are planning to plant.
It does not matter if you have soft soil or hard soil. All soil is the same and it's the way you prepare it that will determine how good it is to grow things. Here are some steps for you to properly prepare your garden soil for flowers.
• Remove grass – The first thing you want to do is get rid of obstructions in the soil. Grass is great but if you have grass in the same area that you will grow flowers, the flowers might not grow at all.
You need to clear that area of grass first and make sure that there are no other obstructions there like weeds and other forms of vegetation. Make sure that you do this thoroughly so that the weeds do not return and kill whatever it is you plant in that area.
It's also not a good idea to use pesticides or herbicides when getting rid of grass or weeds. You can do this naturally and with just a little more effort than usual, you can clear the area safely.
• Manure the soil – While you are preparing the soil, you may want to mix it with healthy manure or even use compost on the flower bed. This will make the soil healthy and ready for flowers. Make sure that you put a thick layer on. Two inches thick should do the trick.
• Fork it – With a garden fork or even a spade, the next thing you should do is to turn the soil over on itself so that you get the healthy soil underneath onto the top of the flower bed. Then, you can use the fork to break up the big clumps of soil and then with a rake, even out the area and get rid of small pebbles or stones.
• Give it time – This is especially important in gardening. Make sure that you give enough time for everything to sink in. Time is very important for the soil that you prepared so that it “gets healthy” enough for planting. You may even need to wait a whole season before you start to plant anything in your flower garden. Let worms move into the area and start to mix and make the place rich. Just let the soil settle into the area naturally.
• Plant without digging – Once the soil is prepared or ready to take in seeds so that you can start growing your flower garden, it's important that you do not dig up the soil again. It's already soft enough and you can start to plant seeds just by using your hands and pushing the seeds into it. If you dig, the soil will be unsettled and you might have to prepare it all over again.
