Five Garden Maintenance Tips

Gardening is more than just planting. Just because you are down setting all the plants into the ground it doesn't mean that your job is done. In fact, your job is just beginning. In order for a garden to thrive, you will have to maintain it. Here are some garden maintenance tips.

1. Do not ever forget to water your plants. This is important especially if you live in hot areas where the sun can get really hot. High temperature can result to dried up plant beds and dehydrated plant roots.

To keep this from happening, you will have to water your plants twice a day. Plants need water in order to stay alive. Without water the plants will dry up and wilt. A garden filled with wilted plants is not nice to look at.

Be careful though when watering because some plants don't need a lot of water. So make sure that you know which plants need a lot of water and which plants need minimal water. Too much water can also cause the roots to rot.

2. Weeding. Do this on a regular basis. There are times when no matter how meticulously you prepared the area, weeds will always grow along with your plants. Weeding should be done on a regular basis to keep the weed population at a minimum. If you allow the weeds to thrive, it will take away the nutrients that your plants need. In the end, these weeds are way healthier than your plants. Weeds are not a part of your garden so these should not be seen on any part as much as possible.

3. Pay attention to your plants' arrangement. This is important because not all plants require a lot of sunlight in order to grow so you will have to put them in shady areas. Other than that, arranging your plants will also organize your garden giving it a more tied-together look. A disorganized garden is not a sight to behold. In addition, you risk putting a plant that needs sunlight on the shady parts of your garden which can result to your plant dying.

4. Once in a while you can add fertilizers. These will help your plants in their growth and propagation. Fertilizers come in different forms so make sure you choose the one that is appropriate for the plants that you have in your garden. Also, do not forget to read the instructions as well as the label before using the fertilizer. Like medicine that has dosages when administered, fertilizers have certain amounts to be used. Too much fertilizer can do some harm while too little of it can do little good.

5. Trimming. If you have trees and shrubs, then you will have to trim these on a regular basis. The leaves of the trees can get really thick and provide too much shade. Too much shade is not advisable for some plants because this can keep them from receiving enough sunlight which is essential for photosynthesis.

Shrubs have to be trimmed to keep it neat and clean. Allowing shrubs to grow will result to a messy looking garden. Shrubs can be trimmed into various forms. It can be shaped to a square, circle or even a human form.

It is essential that you maintain your garden because if you don't, everything you planted will surely wilt away.
